What is auriculotherapy?
Auriculotherapy is an alternative medicine technique based on the same precepts as acupuncture. A microsystem is created in the ear, that is, on the outside of the ear, to stimulate points that promote effects throughout the body, in the mental and emotional state.

Stimuli can be performed using the French technique, with the application of filiform needles in the points, or by magnetic spheres and mustard seeds, which remain glued to the skin for a few days.

There are also other options for materials and stimuli that can be applied, such as intradermal needles, crystals and laser. It is a technique adopted to cure problems or to prevent them, in addition to alleviating symptoms as a palliative measure.

How did the technique come about?
In the fourth century BC Hippocrates recorded, in the book “Generation”, that small areas behind the ear, when cauterized, caused sterility. In the 17th century, the Portuguese physician Zacutus Lusitanus continued his studies of Hippocrates, treating hip pain with this same technique.

In the 18th century, Valsalva described that ear cauterization worked in the treatment of toothache. The Chinese, in traditional medicine, mapped about 200 ear points that could be stimulated to treat different conditions.

Approaching our days, in the 20th century, the French physician Paul Nogier dedicated 20 years of studies to auriculotherapy, recording 43 points related to the organs and systems of the human body. In the French school, there is a difference in the cartography of points compared to the Chinese school.

This divergence found in the ear maps of the two schools exists because they were based on different premises. There is also a slight variation in the way the treatment is conducted in relation to the materials used to stimulate the stitches.

What is the indication for auriculotherapy?
Auriculotherapy has a wide application, even for people in special groups, such as the elderly. So it is a very safe method.

It can be applied, as explained, with the aim of preventing or treating conditions related to physical, mental and emotional health.

Some of its many indications:

Postoperative pain
Pain is a very common condition in the postoperative phase. Auriculotherapy has a significant contribution to the recovery of patients who underwent hip, knee and dental surgery, minimizing the use of analgesics, even during hospitalization.

Acute and chronic pain control
Acute pains such as ear, headaches, menstrual pain, sore throat, due to hemorrhoids, gestational pain, and biliary colic, can also be relieved by stimulating the right areas.

Even patients who suffer from chronic pain, such as those caused by arthrosis and rheumatoid arthritis, get good control of them. The analgesic effect brings relief and comfort, and this can significantly contribute to the quality of life at work, providing well-being for employees who present situations like these.

Anxiety and Depression
Auriculotherapy is effective in treating mental and emotional problems. That's why depression and anxiety are other conditions treated with this technique.

In cases of anxiety, the method was 20% effective in patients who received stimulation of the right points.

Palliative cancer treatment
Cancer is a disease that causes a lot of pain, especially when it is more advanced or metastatic.

Auriculotherapy is a palliative method that helps to provide relief from these pains, bringing more well-being during the treatment of tumors.

Improving the immune system
The immune system is positively impacted by auriculotherapy, maintaining its stabilization. As the technique also regulates heart rate, blood pressure, reduces stress, increases vitality and energy, this effect is intensified, minimizing susceptibility to disease.

What are the points of auriculotherapy?

The French and Chinese schools have differences in the location of ear points. While the first registered 43, the second has more than 200, each corresponding to a specific body or system.

The ShenMen and Brainstem points, for example, were the ones that showed good results in reducing anxiety levels. There are also those:

  • specific for the treatment of allergies;
  • that attach to the fingers of the hand;
  • that treat the inner ear;
  • regulate blood pressure;
  • corresponding to the gallbladder, liver, spine, cervical, adrenal glands,...

That's why this technique should be applied by an expert with extensive knowledge of the method, since many of these points are very close. Knowing how to locate and identify each one of them is essential.

How is this procedure performed?
Auriculotherapy is performed with some slight variations of the technique, depending on the school. In the case of the French woman, the method is aimed at using conventional, semi-permanent, laser, infrared and even ear massage needles. The Chinese school applies the method using needles, seeds and crystals.

After identifying the patient's need, the point related to the problem to be treated is located. Needles can be placed, which will remain in the skin for 10 to 30 minutes. Stimulators stay in contact with the ear for days.

Intradermal needles, magnetic beads, crystals or seeds are positioned over these points and fixed using adhesive tape. They remain there for about 7 to 10 days, then they are removed by the therapist or by the patient.

It is also possible to observe the points that manifest changes and make the prevention of diseases or diagnosis. There are no absolute contraindications, but some patients need to be treated with more caution, such as those with active infections, diabetics, immunocompromised patients and pregnant women.

How many sessions are needed?
The amount of auriculotherapy sessions varies according to the patient's needs. Some may need a longer time of stimulation to promote the expected effect. Others, with lighter frames, perceive good results with a smaller amount of them.

Up to ten sessions can be performed, which also varies according to the method chosen. Furthermore, the patient can undergo this therapy periodically, such as every six months or a year, also as needed.
