How to treat nipples while breastfeeding? DGS recommends:

How to prevent cracked nipples?
While breastfeeding, be careful not to get cracked nipples:

  • make sure the baby latches well to the breast
  • apply 2 to 3 drops of breast milk to the nipple and areola and/or healing ointment after bathing and each feeding
  • avoid using waterproof absorbent pads
  • do not interrupt the feeding, let the baby do it (if you really have to interrupt, gently place a finger in the baby's mouth to stop sucking)
  • wash the nipples only once a day, in the course of daily hygiene

I have cracked nipples. What should I do?
If you have cracked nipples:

  • start breastfeeding from the non-painful nipple
  • continue to apply 2 to 3 drops of breast milk to the nipple and areola, and wait for it to dry
  • when breastfeeding with a cracked nipple, you may notice that your baby has “milk” mixed with blood

How can I prevent breast inflammation (mastitis)?
Prevent mastitis:

  • treat engorgement and cracked nipples early
  • avoid excessive compression of the breast with fingers while breastfeeding
  • avoid wearing clothes that compress the breast
  • air the breast at the end of breastfeeding

Is your breast inflamed?
Please note that:

  • should continue to breastfeed, may start with the unaffected breast
  • after feeding, empty the affected side manually or with a pump
  • apply cold compresses as in engorgement
  • rest and, if necessary, consult the nurse or doctor

How to prevent engorgement (tense and hot) of the breasts?
Prevent engorgement:

  • start breastfeeding right after giving birth
  • make sure the baby latches well to the breast
  • breastfeed in free time (whenever the baby wants)

Do you have breast engorgement?
To resolve this situation:

  • apply hot compresses or shower with warm water and gently massage the skin with circular movements in relation to the nipple
  • put the baby to the fullest breast first
  • if the breast remains congested after breastfeeding, you should empty it manually or with the help of a breast pump, until you feel better
  • at the end apply cold compresses or ice (protected) for 5 minutes, suspend for 2 minutes and reapply another 5 minutes
  • at the next feeding repeat this procedure on the other breast

Need to express breast milk and don't know how?
If you need to express breast milk:

choose a suitable place and times, try to relax, have a warm drink, listen to music, look at your baby (or a photo of him)
Gently massage the breast with the knuckles, or touch lightly with the fingertips, in a circular motion and also around the areola towards the nipple

How should I manually express breast milk?
To collect your milk you need a sterilized or scalded cup. Get comfortable and follow these steps:

  • make a “c” with your hand, placing your thumb above the areola (area around the nipple) and your index finger below
  • keep your breast pressed against your ribs
  • press, with thumb and forefinger at the same time
  • then relieve the pressure
  • press again
  • relieve again, repeating these steps in a rhythmic motion

How should I wash the breast milk pump?
Materials used in extraction and storage can be washed in the dishwasher (check product specifications first), or under running water and soap (do not use concentrated detergents). They must be rinsed well with running water and then boiled or sterilized. It is essential that you wash your hands, before expressing breast milk, and whenever you handle the materials.

How long can breast milk be stored?
You can store breast milk in the fridge or freezer, in containers suitable for food:

  • short periods of time (72 hours): freezer bags
  • extended time periods (> 3 months): rigid plastic or glass containers, with lids
  • If in doubt, talk to your doctor or nurse.

How should I transport breast milk?
When you don't have a fridge or need to transport your breast milk:

  • use a thermal bag
  • renew ice every 24 hours
  • protect breast milk from direct contact with ice

How should I store breast milk?
You must ensure some care in the conservation of breast milk:

  • keep small portions in the cold, in different containers
  • as soon as you get the desired amount, freeze it
  • you can freeze milk even if it has been kept in the fridge for 48 hours
  • never add freshly expressed (warm) breast milk to already cold or frozen breast milk
  • identify the containers and record the date of each freezing
  • in the refrigerator, food must be in properly closed boxes to avoid the risk of contamination of breast milk

How do I thaw breast milk?
If you need to thaw breast milk, you should take the following precautions:

  • consume breast milk stored the longest first
  • prefer a slow defrost in the fridge
  • Regarding thawed breast milk:
  • consume within 24 hours;
  • do not refreeze

The microwave is still not suitable for thawing or warming human breast milk.

If it is urgent to speed up defrosting, you can place the container under running water, first “cold” and then lukewarm. This breast milk will only be valid for immediate consumption.

disable:

  • warm, unconsumed breast milk
  • bad odor breast milk

I'm pregnant, but I'm breastfeeding. Can I continue to breastfeed?
There is no contraindication for breastfeeding during pregnancy. However, you may start to notice that there is a reduction in your milk due to hormonal changes. When talking to your doctor you should let him know.
