Additional Information:

There are several types of gowns, aprons, and uniforms used by healthcare professionals to provide a protective barrier and reduce the chances of microorganism transmission in healthcare services, thus preventing contamination of healthcare professionals' clothing and exposure of their skin to organic materials, as well as protecting patients from nosocomial infections. However, improper use of gowns, aprons, and uniforms by healthcare professionals can make these garments a potential vehicle for microorganism transmission.

The healthcare professional must make correct use of the gown as PPE; for this, a series of precautions must be taken, and we list here two that we consider general and important.

  1. Remove the gown whenever leaving the service area to socialize (e.g., bars, break rooms, etc.) to prevent the gown from being a vehicle for microorganism transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) advises that the use of the gown (or uniform used in healthcare services) should be restricted to the workplace.
  2. Do not use accessories, other than the essential ones (ID badges and dosimeter) applied to the gown, to avoid these accessories becoming a vehicle for microorganism transmission.
