How to store, freeze and thaw breast milk
Expressed breast milk is the best food for your baby when you are away from him. So how can you safely store and use your milk?

If you're back at work, heading to a gym class, or simply want your partner to take care of a feeding session so you can catch up on your sleep, you can express your breast milk and keep it for your baby when you are not with him. Expressed breast milk retains most of its health benefits, so if you need to miss a feeding session, it's far better for your baby than any type of formula milk. But good hygiene is essential to ensure that preserved milk is safe for your baby. Read on to find out how to properly store breast milk.

What is the best method to store breast milk?
Breast milk is better for your baby than formula milk, but freshly expressed breast milk is preferable to refrigerated, and refrigerated is better than frozen. That's because freshly expressed breast milk has the best.

bacteria-fighting properties and a higher content of antioxidants, vitamins and fat than refrigerated or frozen milk.4

How long can you store your expressed breast milk?
If you expressed breast milk hygienically and safely, you can store it at room temperature, in the fridge or freezer, depending on when you want to use it. Follow these guidelines:

Guidelines for the conservation of freshly expressed breast milk (for healthy term babies).

* Very hygienic conditions means strictly following the guidance in our article on how to clean and disinfect your breast pump. These guidelines on storing and thawing breast milk are a recommendation. For more information, contact your lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist.

If your baby is in a neonatal intensive care unit (Neonatal ICU) or a special care ward, your hospital may have stricter recommendations for cleaning and care.

If you refrigerate or freeze expressed milk, always label the bottles or bags with the amount and date the milk was expressed, so you can monitor and manage your preserved milk.

Guidelines on the use of expressed breast milk
Preserved breast milk tends to separate into layers, with the fat (cream) on top. Gently shake the bottle to mix the layers before feeding your baby. Vigorously shaking or shaking can damage some of the nutritional and protective components of milk.5

When your baby feeds on expressed breast milk, with a cup or a bottle, it is natural for bacteria to pass from their mouth to the milk. For this reason, it is best to throw away any leftover half-drunk milk one to two hours after your initial feeding session. To avoid wasting expressed milk, it's a good idea to keep it in small amounts and only use what you need.

How to store breast milk in the fridge
Follow these guidelines on how to safely store expressed milk in the fridge:

Refrigerate your breast milk as quickly as possible after expressing.
Store your breast milk in breast milk bottles or clean storage bags made from BPA-free materials. BPA is a chemical that has been widely used in plastic containers and liners and that manufacturers are phasing out due to uncertainty about its long-term effects.
Small amounts of expressed milk can be added to the same refrigerated container, provided that the milk you want to add has been previously cooled in the refrigerator. Do not add body temperature milk to already cooled milk.
Store breast milk in the coldest part of the fridge – at the back, on the shelf above the vegetable compartment. Do not keep it on the fridge door, where the temperature is less constant.

How to store breast milk in the freezer

Read on for how to safely freeze breast milk:

Freeze your breast milk as quickly as possible after expressing.
You can add expressed milk to already frozen breast milk, as long as the milk you want to add has been previously cooled in the fridge. Do not add body temperature milk to frozen milk.
For easier defrosting with minimal waste, store your milk in small portions (less than 60 ml). You can add them after they've been thawed.
Make sure your breast milk storage containers can be placed in the freezer. Some products (such as glass jars) can break at very low temperatures. Medela breast milk storage bags are ideal for storing frozen breast milk, as they are freezer-friendly, ready to use and easy to label.
Do not fill bottles or bags more than 3/4 full, as breast milk expands during freezing.
Store frozen breast milk in the back of the freezer, where the temperature is more constant. Keep it away from the walls of self-defrosting freezers.
Using frozen breast milk

Be careful when thawing breast milk to make sure it is safe for your baby:

Breast milk can be thawed in the fridge, usually in about 12 hours. Alternatively, keep the bottle or milk bag frozen under running lukewarm water (maximum 37°C or 99°F). Do not let breast milk thaw at room temperature.
Once completely thawed, breast milk can be kept at room temperature for a maximum of two hours, or in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Do not thaw or heat frozen breast milk in a microwave or in boiling water. It can damage its nutritional and protective properties and create hot spots that can burn your baby.
Breast milk left at room temperature should be given to your baby within two hours, or thrown away.
Never refreeze thawed breast milk.

How to warm your preserved breast milk
Healthy term babies can drink breast milk at room temperature or warm to body temperature. Some have a preference; others don't care.

To warm your milk, place the bottle or bag of breast milk in a glass, pitcher, or bowl of warm water for a few minutes until it is at body temperature (37°C or 99°F). Alternatively, use a bottle warmer. Do not let the temperature rise above 40 °C (104 °F) and do not use a microwave, as this can overheat the milk.
Gently shake the bottle or bag, without shaking or shaking, to mix in any fat that has separated (see above).
Why does my preserved breast milk smell strange?
You may notice that your refrigerated or thawed breast milk sometimes smells different. This is because an enzyme called lipase breaks down fats and releases fatty acids, in a process that helps prevent harmful bacteria from growing.

Some mothers report that their preserved breast milk has a soapy, or rancid, smell. But if you've followed all the guidelines in this article on safe storage, you can use it without any problem.2

Conserving breast milk while traveling
If you have to transport your breast milk between work and home or kindergarten, use a cooler bag with ice packs.2 For more information on expressing and storing when travelling, read our travel and pumping article. .
