Silicone teat specially developed for newborn babies with difficulty sucking, especially for babies with malformations of the palate.

The valve in the teat makes the milk flow slowly and steadily, as well as preventing the baby from swallowing air.

You can easily regulate both the amount of milk and the flow.

Contains 2 teats.

Supports oral feeding of babies
Provides a variable and controllable milk flow to adjust to baby's abilities and efforts
It is sensitive to even the smallest suction effort
It helps when the baby cannot create a vacuum.

What is the Medela SpecialNeeds teat?
The SpecialNeeds Teat offers you a way to feed your baby breast milk if he is physically unable to drink from your breast or a bottle.

If your baby has a condition that makes breastfeeding difficult, such as a cleft lip and palate, or a disability, or neurological condition, Medela's SpecialNeeds Teat may be the solution. These conditions may mean that your baby cannot create a vacuum to drink your breast milk. The SpecialNeeds Teat allows him to use light compression instead.

Feeding babies with special needs
The SpecialNeeds teat is designed to allow baby to use compression when unable to create a vacuum to extract liquid. The one-way valve prevents air from entering the teat. The caregiver can easily control the milk flow thanks to the slit valve mechanism.

Benefits of the SpecialNeeds Teat
The line on the teat helps the caregiver to find the right position (three different flows).

The slot valve makes the teat sensitive to any suction effort and closes completely when the baby wants to stop. The one-way valve prevents air from entering the teat.

The SpecialNeeds teat is available in a standard size. If the size of your baby's oral cavity requires the smaller SpecialNeeds Mini Teat, simply replace the teat.

The SpecialNeeds teat can be reused after cleaning in accordance with the instructions for use.

How the Medela SpecialNeeds Teat works
Instead of a standard teat, Medela's SpecialNeeds Teat has a longer, thinner, ultra-soft silicone teat. At the end, it has a valve with a groove that opens when the baby makes the slightest compression to feed and closes when he takes a break, so that he is not suffocated with his expressed milk.

The mark on the teat helps you find the best position to feed your baby. When the baby compresses the teat, the milk flow varies according to the position of the teat. You can also compress the teat slightly to help your baby get more milk. A one-way valve, between the bottle and the teat, allows you to control the flow safely and prevents air from entering.

A SpecialNeeds Mini Teat is available for smaller mouths. Both the standard and mini versions are reusable if they are cleaned and sanitized according to the instructions.

When using a SpecialNeeds Teat.
For some babies, using a special teat, such as Medela's SpecialNeeds Teat, means they no longer need to be tube fed. If your baby is able to latch on to the breast, but doesn't have the strength or energy to get all the milk he needs from your breast, it can be an effective way to supplement your breastfeeding sessions with expressed milk to meet his nutritional needs.

This is important, because many babies with special needs can be discharged from the hospital if they can get the milk they need to grow properly. So a SpecialNeeds Teat can make all the difference between your baby staying in the hospital or going home.

If your baby needs surgery, Medela's SpecialNeeds Teat can also be an effective way to feed him in the short term if he is too sore or weak to feed after an operation.

Using the Medela SpecialNeeds Teat
If you think you need, or your baby needs, feeding support, seek the advice of a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist. They may advise you to use the SpecialNeeds Teat. If they do, ask them to supervise your first feeding sessions with the device. They can also advise you on how much expressed milk to give your baby.

Your baby may only need the SpecialNeeds Teat for a short time. As you grow and get stronger, you may learn to take your milk directly from your breasts. Even if the teat works well for you, it is always worth continuing to offer the breast in each breastfeeding session.

Medela has a range of other products to help make it possible to feed babies with special needs breast milk, including a supplemental nutrition system and the soft cup bottle. Visit our breast milk feeding page to learn more.
