extratores de leite flex

When extracting milk for your baby, both occasionally and every day, you want the experience to be as comfortable and effective as possible.

The embudo, the part of the extraction kit that is placed on the foot and the sine during the extraction, plays a key role in the convenience and effectiveness during the extraction.1 With this in mind, Medela has always made an effort to offer a variety of sizes of embudo tunnels that adapt to different pitch diameters. However, Medela's teams continued to ask themselves about the possibility of optimizing even more the embudo.

margin of improvement
An embudo has two main piezas: a tunnel for the foot to move from the front and back and a pieza in the lower angle, called the cone, which is placed on top of the sine. Ideally, you should follow the form of your sine and not compress it, as explained by Dr. Danielle Prime, Associate Researcher in Maternal Lactation at the Department of Medical Research of Medela: "The opening angle of a typical embudo cone is 90°. Although this form of cone works well, it doesn't look like much that I have seen in my investigation career!

"We didn't know if this part of the extractor had an impact on the milk extraction and the adjustment and the general comfort of the mother. We knew that it had the potential to be optimized", she says.

Danielle and her colleagues used Medela's first world database of 3D images of lactating sines to study the various contours and shapes of the lactating sine.2 "We found that the 90° angle could be very restrictive for some mothers", she says. "We also discovered that the breast tissue could not easily enter the cone and that the first part of the embudo that touched the sine was the hard outer edge, which could cause discomfort".

A new angle for extraction
This led the research team to experiment with embudo cones from different angles. They discovered that an angle of 120° allowed the mothers to push the foot more deeply into the extractor tunnel, but the edge was out of the sine, which increased the possibilities of a poor seal.

But with a 105° angle, the equipment found exactly what I was looking for: "The 105° angle really adapted to the contour of the sine. We think this could really increase the comfort and promote the flow of milk to the wide area of milk pipelines", says Dr. Prime.

During the pump, her foot must be well centered in the tunnel so that she can move freely inside without touching. The team of researchers found that the 105° angle also contributed to this. "When opening the angle of the cone slightly, the foot can be inside the tunnel when the extraction begins. Currently, for two thirds of the madres, the foot is not inside the tunnel when the extraction begins. . So it's hard to know if you're well centered", says Dr. Prime.

What's more, your nipple diameter can increase by 2 to 3 mm during pumping or breastfeeding,4 so your tunnel size needs to be slightly larger than your nipple, as Dr. Prime explains: "The size of the funnel has to do with the nipple-tunnel match and not the size of the bra. We know that many mothers choose the size of their funnel because the label says "L" on the packaging and they have big breasts. is not correct."

As a general rule, the tunnel of the embudo must be 4 mm larger than the diameter of its foot before starting the extraction. The good news is that Medela offers five sizes of tunnels: "Use our guide to guides to make sure you get the right size for us, according to the diameter of your foot", says Dr. Prime.

New oval shape and new smooth edge
And the innovations did not break down there. In a great example of collaboration between experts, including experts in research and products, design and engineering centered on the user, along with the work in close collaboration with the mothers that amamantan, the embudo evolved to include an oval shape that could rotate 360° . This meant that the mothers could move it around the pecho until they found a good sell.

"We kept the cone in a 105° angle around this oval shape, without a part more open than the other", explains Dr. Prime. "So there's no wrong way to support it. Mothers can put it in the box where it fits better".

"Depending on you, the pecho is very full, very little or empty, its shape and contour can vary and the new embudo also adapts to this: "Now the mothers can experiment with different ways of attaching the oval embudo, to see which ones more comfortable during extraction", says Dr. Prime.

Finally, Medela's engineers also provided the PersonalFit Flex™ embudo with a smooth, smooth and flexible edge. In addition to providing a very good fit and a comfortable extraction experience, this allows the embudo to be sold well according to the shape of the sine.

It was time to take the prueba
With the 105° oval embudo ready to use, the moment to put it ready. The equipment carried out four clinical studies with mothers that extract milk, in hospitals, in their homes and in the laboratory of the central headquarters of Medela in Switzerland.5

"One of the tools consisted of recording in depth the foot movement during extraction. We had a small camera for the foot, which was fun! It allowed us to see how the foot movement dynamics was different from this new angle more amplio del embudo.", reveals Dr. Prime. "What we saw was a belief that the pezones de las madres would behave exactly as we had predicted with the 3D images".

With positive results in this case, the team started to evaluate the mothers who extract milk exclusively and the mothers who extract milk occasionally, in hospitals and in the home. What will they find?

Manuela, mother of two children, Switzerland, was impressed: "I have had a bigger breast size and I have always had difficulties finding the correct position with round embossing. With the oval PersonalFit Flex™ embossing it was easier and faster to find a good position and it was much more comfortable.

"Ladies know that the PersonalFit Flex™ breast protector is designed to better adapt to the shape of your breasts", says Dr. Prime. "This makes a lot of sense, because it allows it to take shape inside the embudo, instead of having to press it down."

Jeannine, mother of two children, Switzerland, agrees: "The first time I tried the PersonalFit Flex™ embudo, I put it and thought: 'Wow, I really fall! first time. . It's a pity that I didn't have the oval embudo since the beginning. Maybe it had been extracted better!"

"We discovered that the majority of mothers eat with the embudo horizontally, some vertically and some diagonally", says Dr. Prime. "Y many mothers change position or try different ways of sustaining it in the following extraction sessions".

Major milk cant
But perhaps the most important question is centered on the effectiveness of the new PersonalFit Flex™ embudo: would it increase the volume of milk that the mother extracts during extraction?

To understand this, Medela's scientists carried out a random control test. They told the mothers who had been exclusively or predominantly breastfeeding for one to six months (and therefore had a constant and established milk supply) who had extra milk from time to time for 15 minutes with an embudo and hicieran even a week afterward. another embudo. The mother's mitad first used the new 105° oval embossing and the others started with the 90° round embossing.

"We showed that when mothers used the new breast protector, they obtained significantly more milk", says Dr. Prime. "By observing the 'percentage of available milk extracted', we can also decide that the embudo has significantly improved the mammary drainage.

How Flex™ technology offers flexibility
Three of the best-selling electric milk extractors from Medela are now available with Flex™ technology: the single Swing milk extractor, the double Swing Maxi milk extractor and the Freestyle, which include two cup sizes (21 mm and 24 mm ). If you rent a Symphony with a Medela PersonalFit™ Plus Emboss, you can buy the new and innovative PersonalFit™ Flex Emboss to use it with.

The three best-selling pumps also have a comfortable-to-hold connector, with built-in spill protection (also known as a closed system), allowing you to extract in any sitting position that works for you.

This worked for Manuela: "Usually, when I pump, I have to check that the milk is still flowing well and that nothing has moved. With this oval funnel, I had the feeling that nothing was moving and I could lean back in a more relaxed position. I wasn't so obsessed with making sure everything was in place."

Jeannine agrees: "Because the funnel was placed differently on my breast, I felt the milk flowed better and I could lean back without having milk blocking the funnel."

The fact that mothers like Manuela and Jeannine feel more relaxed and comfortable using the new funnel could explain the increase in milk volume, as stress and discomfort can inhibit the hormone oxytocin, which is essential for the release of breast milk.

Another theory to explain why this new funnel increases the volume of milk is that its shape more closely matches the contour of the breast. When the let-down reflex occurs, the milk ducts in your breast increase by 68% in size to receive all the milk that flows through them to your nipple.8 This new shape and angle appears to help milk flow more freely. .

And it's this kind of in-depth knowledge of the science of breast milk production that allows Medela to make innovations like this, as Dr. Prime explains:

"Medela is a research-based company - it's in our DNA. We invest both in basic research on 'how breastfeeding works' and in applied research, like this funnel work we did with mothers. empowered to have a scientific basis for innovation and an evidence base for our products, to help more mothers give their babies their fantastic milk, for longer. And so we say we bring research to life, which is essentially , the story behind Flex™ technology – is a very good example of this."
