Difference between deodorants, antiperspirants and antiperspirants

There is a wide variety of products on the shelves of supermarkets and pharmacies aimed at solving the problem of the bad smell of sweat, especially in the armpit region. Deodorants, antiperspirants and antiperspirants, with other options, such as cream, aerosol, spray and roll-on. How to choose?

If you don't sweat a lot

If you don't sweat a lot and just want to reduce the unpleasant odor, a deodorant is indicated. The deodorant, as the name says, has the function of de odorizing, that is, eliminating the odor.

Now let's get to know the constitution of sweat, which has a very important function of maintaining body temperature. Like? When sweat evaporates, the body is cooled and, on the other hand, it keeps the skin hydrated and eliminates metabolites. In addition, it is odorless as it is practically water (99%) and ions such as potassium, chloride, sodium, ammonium, low molar carboxylic acids, urea and other components.

However, on the skin, there are bacteria that break down some sweat substances, producing others with an unpleasant odor, especially carboxylic acids.

Thus, the deodorant has chemical substances, mainly triclosan, whose structural formula is shown below, which are capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria on the skin, thus masking the bad smell.

Deodorants may also have other components, such as alcohol and essences. For this reason, exposing the armpit to the sun with deodorant (or any product that contains alcohol) can cause blemishes and darkening of the skin.

Sweats a lot

If you sweat a lot and would like to eliminate the bad smell and unpleasant sensation of sweating, you should use antiperspirants.

Antiperspirants act as sweat inhibitors and keep the body relatively dry. Antiperspirants have the same function, since the word “perspirate” means “perspiration insensibly over the entire surface”.

Thus, not all deodorants have an antiperspirant action, but most antiperspirants also have a deodorizing action, because they also contain substances that mask the odor.

The main active component of antiperspirants is aluminum hydrochloride, whose Al3+ cations clot proteins, forming blocking structures that close the ducts of the sweat glands, reducing sweat production. Because of this, there is a risk of clogged pores and gland inflammation. Some people may experience irritation to aluminum-derived components.

It has been widely known that aluminum salts and derivatives used in antiperspirants can cause breast cancer in women. The explanation is that aluminum can be absorbed by the body and accumulate. However, ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) released a Technical Opinion on the Use of Antiperspirants and their Relation to Breast Cancer, indicating that to date, evidence and data capable of confirming this relationship have not yet been presented. However, research continues to be carried out in this area.

Finally, regarding the most suitable type for each skin, need and taste, see the suggestions below:

1. Cream: It's what most hydrates the skin, so shave your armpits with a razor, this is the best option;

2. Roll-on: This type of deodorant is not very suitable for having direct contact with the skin, and it can be contaminated;

3. Spray: In the case of deodorant or antiperspirants spray, they are presented in liquid form and may cause burning on the skin;

4. Aerosol: It dries the fastest of all, but in addition to causing skin irritation, stains on clothes, the liquid comes under strong pressure, combined with gases. If there is a danger: make sure that the aerosol spray deodorant or antiperspirant we buy does not contain CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), as they are polluting gases that aggravate the problem of the greenhouse effect and global warming.

An important piece of information is that if we use basic substances such as milk of magnesia and talc with sodium bicarbonate, it will cause the bacteria to die.
