All about rhinitis

What is rhinitis?

Rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal mucosa that causes frequent dripping, sneezing, coughing, headache, tearing, itching and red eyes, for example.

It can be caused by:

  • dust allergy,
  • dust mite allergy,
  • hair allergy,
  • as a consequence of the use of nasal decongestants, for example, resulting in rhinitis medication.

Rhinitis treatment

It may vary according to the cause, and must be guided by a health professional.

How to treat:

anti-allergy medication, hygiene
cleaning of the environment and immunotherapy, in cases where drug treatment is not sufficient.

Symptoms of rhinitis

  • Runny nose (runny nose).
  • Frequent sneezing.
  • Red eyes.
  • tearing.
  • Persistent dry cough.
  • Burning sensation in eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Vomiting, in case of excessive coughing.
  • dark circles
  • Sore throat.
  • Headache.
  • Swollen eyes.
  • Decreased hearing and smell.
  • Rhinitis can favor the emergence of other diseases, such as otitis and conjunctivitis due to the accumulation of secretions in the airways and compromised immune system functioning.

Possible causes
It can be originated by:

  • dust allergy,
  • mites,
  • animal skin peeling,
  • pollen from trees or flowers,
  • pollution
  • smoke.
  • as a result of a viral or bacterial infection in the airways.

Rhinitis diagnosis
You should consult the doctor or allergist.

A blood test checks if the amount of IgE is high and an allergy test identifies which substances the subject is allergic to.

The diagnosis can be made from 5 years of age (before this age the results may be incorrect). If you suspect that the child has allergic rhinitis, you should try to identify the causes and keep the house well clean, free of dust, use hypoallergenic products, the child's sheets and clothes should be made of cotton. In the bedroom, avoid soft toys, rugs and curtains.

What is the difference between rhinitis, sinusitis and rhinosinusitis?
Rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal mucosa, which usually occurs in allergy, and which manifests itself with frequent sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose and mouth.

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses and is more associated with bacterial infections. The most characteristic symptoms of sinusitis are pain and heaviness in the head, usually due to the accumulation of secretions.

Rhinosinusitis corresponds to inflammation of the nasal mucosa and sinuses and has the same symptoms as sinusitis.

Types of rhinitis
Rhinitis can be classified into a few types according to the cause, the main ones being:

1. Allergic rhinitis: most common form of rhinitis. The main symptom is a runny nose, a transparent and low-quantity secretion. Constant or frequent.

To treat keep the individual away from what he has an allergy and use an antiallergic drug, such as Loratadine, for example. But this medication should not be used in an exaggerated way to avoid side effects and avoid long-term liver involvement. So it is important to discover the cause of the allergy so that it is eliminated and the individual no longer has the symptoms of rhinitis.

If the symptoms of allergic rhinitis persist for more than 3 months, it can be said that allergic rhinitis has progressed to chronic rhinitis. Check out the symptoms and treatment for chronic rhinitis.

2. Vasomotor rhinitis: inflammation of the nasal mucosa caused by changes in the individual's own nose, not caused by allergy. The nose is always running, but the allergy tests are always negative.

In this case, excess nasal secretion is caused by excessive dilation of blood and lymph vessels present inside the nose and, sometimes, the best treatment is surgery.

3. Medication rhinitis: self-medication is the cause (use of medication without proper medical guidance). This is the case with the nasal decongestant, used by many people, but which can cause irritation to the nasal mucosa when used frequently.

treatment for rhinitis
It depends on the cause, and it is important to follow the doctor's instructions.

If the cause is an allergy, remove what gives you allergy, keep your nose always very clean using nasal washes, and on the most critical days use an allergy medicine.
