What is shea butter?
"Shea butter is a vegetable lipid that comes from African shea tree nuts and is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins."

The polyphenols in shea butter - antioxidants - have anti-aging benefits and properties similar to those found in green tea. It contains five essential fatty acids (mostly from stearic and oleic acids), a category that includes phytosterols, vitamins E and D, allantoin (good for curing skin irritations) 2 and vitamin A.

Benefits of shea butter for the skin
It is moisturizing: “Shea Butter is great for moisturizing and soothing the skin. It penetrates the skin well and protects the face from extreme temperatures ”. The healing benefits of shea butter skin are almost countless.
It is complete: "Shea butter is used to help moisturize, nourish and soothe the skin". "It's great for dry skin and can create smoother, hydrated and plumper skin, especially during the dry winter months. Shea butter is also found in many lip balms - chapped lips, as well as moisturizers that help prevent stretch marks."

Helps to mitigate acne scars and heal sunburned, cracked and peeling skin.

Soothes skin allergies (for example, poison ivy and insect bites) and skin diseases (contact dermatitis and psoriasis).

Some users have reported that Shea butter relieves the symptoms of rheumatism (although this claim is not proven, nor is it supported by dermatologists).

The combination of components in shea butter helps to neutralize free radical damage, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles and fades age spots.

It can stimulate collagen production, reverse the signs of aging from the outside to the inside and from the inside to the outside.

Shea butter is not only moisturizing for the skin; it also translates those same properties into your hair.

How to use shea butter?
Shea butter can be used alone, but it is often used as an ingredient in cosmetics. "The best option is to incorporate it in a moisturizer with other ingredients to make it easier to spread, since it is usually a thick solid at room temperature."

You can use shea butter alone or make your own products, and you can buy it in bulk. Raw shea butter should be rubbed into the skin in order to moisturize it and protect the skin barrier.

The refined shea butter included in something else (lipsticks, lip balms, body creams, body butters) is used as a moisturizing ingredient in these as well.

How to do it at home?

Shea Butter Moisturizing Balm
Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup shredded shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon of grated beeswax or soy wax

Mix the ingredients in a glass container suitable for the microwave or measuring cup. Use the microwave to gently heat the shea butter and beeswax. Pour in a glass jar of 4 to 5 portions and let it cool. Stir again. Use in dry areas. It is great for knees, elbows and can even be used to treat and prevent chapped lips.

Moisturizing Hand Cream

Heat two teaspoons of coconut oil, one teaspoon of almond oil, one teaspoon of cocoa butter and one teaspoon of shea butter in a microwave-safe bowl or container. Heat only for two to three seconds, until the ingredients melt, but never boil.

Mix them up and spread them on your hands. It is a great moisturizing treatment for your hands during the winter months.
