Kit of syringes for nasal wash, ideal for cleaning babies' noses.

Can use with 1L serum bottle. Look here.

Advice:

Pour some serum into a container and aspirate with the syringe. In this way, the risk of contamination of the remaining part of the bottle is reduced.

WATER OR SERUM?
To perform the wash, you should always use 0.9% saline solution. Regarding quantity, there is no consensus.

Younger children (around 1 year of age) have a nasal surface of around 2 to 3 cubic centimeters, so parents can use something around 2 to 3 ml of saline.

According to the specialist, as the child grows, the amount of serum can be increased.

WHAT IF THE CHILD SWALLOWS THE SERUM?
The liquid can be swallowed or come out through the nostril. If the child swallows it, no problem.

But it is important not to use water instead of serum.

CAN YOU USE NASAL SPRAY?
If parents do not want to use a syringe and saline solution, an alternative is nasal sprays. It's a matter of individual preference.

Each method has its advantages. When the child has a lot of expectoration, it is preferable to use the syringe. That syringe has the capacity for a greater volume of serum and thus cleaning is more effective!

As far as the spray is concerned, it is more easily administered by the children themselves, depending on their age. And there are also aerosols, which are also easily found in Brazilian pharmacies. These have adequate pressure and nozzles for washing”, completes Maura.

ARE THERE ANY NON-INDICATED NASAL SOLUTIONS?
The guideline is to avoid solutions that contain the preservative called benzalkonium chloride. “We have evidence that it can be harmful to the respiratory nasal mucosa. Therefore, I suggest that this substance be avoided. It is important for parents to always read labels carefully before purchasing and using a product. There are many options available on the market,” she says.

HOW SHOULD THE SYRINGE BE?
The most efficient way to perform nasal hygiene is with plastic syringes. However, the expert recommends that parents give preference to those made especially for this function. “I recommend the beak ones and not the screw ones. Because, in children, the thread of the syringe is big and hurts the nostril. If you can't find them, syringes (without needle) are also a good option”, explains Maura.

HOW TO CALM THE CHILD?
According to Maura, when it becomes a habit, children tend to collaborate with their parents when washing. “In the beginning, they complain a little, but, in general, they end up doing it. It is important”, says the doctor. “The best way to do it will depend on each child's personality and the parents' style,” she explains.

DOES NASAL WASH REPLACE THE HUMIDIFIER?
Washing, according to the doctor, does not dispense with the use of a humidifier. The explanation is that, while the serum washes the nose, removing crusts, the appliance acts by humidifying the ambient air. However, the device should not be used for long periods, as an environment that is too humid is the ideal scenario for the proliferation of fungi and bacteria.
