Additional information

The importance of bathing in the elderly:

It guarantees protection against microorganisms and everything we are exposed to on a daily basis, the skin acts in the body's thermal regulation ― protecting against dehydration ―, helps in the storage of nutrients and contains nerve endings.

The skin is the outer covering of the body, part of the integumentary system (next to hair and fur, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands). Not everyone knows, but the skin is the largest organ in the body and the heaviest, constituting 15% of body weight, with the function of protection against microorganisms and against foreign substances; it acts in the thermoregulation of our organism, protecting us against dehydration; it acts in the reserve of nutrients and, still, contains sensitive nerve endings.

As we get older, the skin becomes thinner, less elastic and drier. Bathing increases the skin's resistance, allowing it to recover faster in case of injuries, for example. For this reason, the first objective when taking care of the skin of the elderly, in order to maintain the properties as much as possible, must remain hydrated, which explains the great importance of bathing for the elderly. There are three ways to bathe the elderly daily. They are: shower, bed bath and partial bath.

I- Shower bath

The safety measures necessary for the safety of the elderly should be taken into account, in the shower standing or sitting, depending on their physical condition. The security measures are:

1. Use a non-slip mat inside the box, preventing falls and slips;
2. Bathroom floor absolutely clean, without creams and oils, also to prevent slips and falls;
3. Water temperature: it cannot be too cold or too hot. Season it before starting the bath procedure;
4. Never leave the elderly person's side when he is able to bathe alone. Always be around to help you if you need any help;
5. Close doors and windows to avoid thermal shocks;
6. Installation of grab bars inside the box, to give it greater security when cleaning;
7. Teaching the elderly that it is dangerous to lean on towel rails and soap dishes, which are fragile and were not designed or installed to support weight.

II- Bed bath

When the elderly cannot get up. However, for the elderly, bed bath can be very embarrassing, as it increases their feeling of dependence, decreases their autonomy and breaks with their privacy. It is essential to maintain a dialogue with the elderly person during the bath. Bathing in bed must be fast, efficient and with all the privacy it deserves. For the elderly, embarrassed by their condition, the sooner they finish their bath, the better.

III- Partial bath

The partial bath can be given in bed or in the bathtub, according to the elderly person's conditions. The areas to wash are: the face, hands, armpits, neck, buttocks, genitals and oral hygiene.

important tips

1. Special care when bathing

The elderly's skin should be examined at bath time, in order to check for the occurrence of lesions, scaling, changes in color (bleached, reddish, bluish), presence of hot regions to the touch, edema, bruises and/or tumors. If any abnormality is found, the caregiver must communicate it to the elderly's family so that they can take the necessary measures to maintain the health and well-being of their loved one.

2. Extra skin hydration

Finished the bath, it's time to hydrate the elderly skin. The application of creams, emollients and lotions help to retain water in the skin which, in turn, increases the moisture of the most superficial layer of the skin and, consequently, increases its protection.

It's forbidden:
On elderly skin, the use of any product containing alcohol is prohibited. Alcohol decreases the moisture in the skin, leading to cracks and other problems.

The use of talc and cornstarch is prohibited. Talc absorbs the little natural oil of elderly skin and the cornstarch, as far as it is concerned, forms a “culture medium”, facilitating the occurrence of infections.
