What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy or intradermotherapy is a non-surgical procedure, widely used in Europe to treat injuries and medical conditions. It consists of the administration of microinjections with conventional or homeopathic medicines, whose ingredients may vary, but usually include extracts of plants, vitamins, minerals, in the middle layer of the skin. Injected substances differ according to purpose and, within the scope of aesthetics, are generally of natural origin.

Mesotherapy has a decontracting, anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous and analgesic action.

Who can undergo Mesotherapy?

All persons who do not present any infection in the area to be treated and have not already shown hypersensitivity to the solutions used in the treatment in order to avoid allergic reactions. It is not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

What professionals can do mesotherapy?

Adequate training is required to practice mesotherapy. Usually there are several members of different health areas that complement their training in this area: masseurs, nurses, physiotherapists, doctors, homeopaths, acupuncturists, pharmacists.

What precautions should be taken before and after each session?

  •  On the day of the session it is not advisable to use any type of cream on the skin, nor should you take any medication containing acetylsalicylic acid (active principle of aspirin, for example) in the days prior to treatment, due to its ability to blood thinner.
  • Another recommendation is that you do not sauna before the session of mesotherapy, due to the consequent vasodilation that can lead to bleeding occurrence in the application of injections.
  • After each session it is advisable not to wear very fair clothes and just washed, avoiding acts that could lead to contamination of the places where the injections were applied.
  • You should avoid doing epilation the next day and should not use body cream for at least 48 hours after treatment.

Within 48 hours after mesotherapy you should avoid:

  • Massage with very hot shower water at procedure site
  • The sun exposure
  • The application of ointments and massage at the treatment site
  • Physiotherapy
  • Hydroginastic

You should apply for 48 hours:

  • Ice with the exception of the spine (to avoid muscular contractures) for 10 minutes at intervals of 2 hours, protected in order to avoid burns. You can use cold compresses or cold spray.

What is the mode of action?

Intradermotherapy has always been described in articles such as the intradermal injection of highly diluted drugs, appropriate for this route of use. The dermis would then become a reservoir from which the products would activate dermal receptors and diffuse slowly, using the microcirculation fluids. The basic procedure of intradermal injections varies greatly from one study to another, reflecting the lack of a methodological standard that supports mesotherapy. In common, such studies describe that mesotherapy consists of intradermal or subcutaneous injections of a drug or a mixture of several products, called mélange.
