Self-massage to discharge hamstrings

First it was the calf self-massage, then the quadriceps massage and today it is the hamstring discharge which, we must say, is the most requested. Is it because it is a muscle group most used in both running and cycling? Well, certainly. And is that the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris form a trio housed in the back of the thigh that is essential for extending the hip and flexing the knee properly.

But before continuing, let's remember that the purpose of these videos and tips is to help you download on your own. Nothing less and, above all, nothing more. If you think you may have a muscle problem that is bigger than a simple overload, what you should do is look for a professional therapist who can assess its importance and guide you correctly.

And now, let's go with Valentí Sanjuan, Miguel Ángel Domínguez and their wise instructions to do a self-massage that decompresses the hamstring muscles and allows us to face physical activity with greater safety and confidence.

How to do a self-massage to discharge the hamstrings?

1. Use massage oil or cream
As we have already mentioned, it is advisable to use massage cream or moisturizer, body oil, talc or similar product that helps the fingers to slip and slide more easily. This way we will avoid stretching the hair during the massage, and the friction with the skin will be much less.

2. Maintain correct body posture
It is important that you feel comfortable. Sit on a surface of a certain length, such as a bed or gurney, or directly on the floor. You will need room to stretch and bend your leg.

3. Take care of hand position
Place your hands in a concave shape, with the fingers up and the thumbs around the quadriceps as shown in the image. Remember to ALWAYS work upwards, towards the heart. In this case, we will do it from the back of the knee to the beginning of the buttocks.

4. Work each zone well
For a good discharge of the hamstring muscles, we must take care of three well differentiated areas (as you can see in the video):

The internal, located near the abductor.
In the middle, in the center of the ischium.
The exterior, very close to the fascia lata. To do the massage correctly you must focus on each region separately and go one by one. Move your fingers from the back of the knee to the beginning of the gluteal with light pressure.
When you get to the most heavily loaded area, you'll find something like a lump, called a "knot". Press a little more with your fingers (always, always, without feeling pain) and make zigzag movements so you can "separate" and relax the muscles.

At the points where the contracture is greatest, spend between 5 and 10 seconds working this zigzag and finish sliding your fingers towards the end.

5. Take your time and respect the massage time
We advise you to perform between 5 and 10 passes in each of the three areas we discussed in the previous point. This may take approximately 3 minutes. But you should do the same on both legs, so the total duration of the self-massage will be between 5 and 10 minutes.

6. Use a recovery cream to finish
It is recommended that at the end of the massage, apply a little recovery cream. This will help you speed up the process and you can get ready faster. If the overload is not particularly intense, Sport Formula will suffice, otherwise the application of Madform Double Power is the best option.
