Calm - similar to breastfeeding
Calma da Medela was conceived exclusively as an option for breastfeeding mothers who want to feed their babies with expressed breast milk. It was developed in collaboration with breastfeeding experts at the Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group at the University of Western Australia. Calma allows your baby to suck, swallow and breathe in a natural way:

  • the baby can drink, take breaks and breathe with a natural rhythm, remaining calm and comfortable
  • the baby has to create a vacuum to start the milk flow
  • the baby can maintain its natural sucking behavior

Additional information

Wouldn't it be a little too long?

Even though Calma seems a little too long: don't worry, it's perfectly long. As you know, your nipple stretches up to 2 times its size in the baby's mouth while feeding. Calma is approximately the same length in the baby's mouth as the nipple while breastfeeding. In any case, it is still important that the baby maintains a correct position to hold Calma (see chapter 7 for more information).

Is one size enough?

You may not believe it, but one size is enough. In the same way that your breast is the same throughout the breastfeeding period. The flow, shape and length of Calma are designed to fit your baby's needs as he grows during breastfeeding.

Can Calma help prevent gases?

Calm can help prevent gases, as the breast milk bottle has a unique ventilation system to control the air intake. Unlike other teat-bottle systems, Calma allows air to pass through regardless of how it is mounted.

Where does the milk come from?

Milk flows through the small hole in the milk flow control system at the top of Calma. The flow of milk is controlled by the interaction between the milk flow control system and the vacuum your baby creates. Unlike conventional teats, compressing Calma will not result in a flow of milk. But you can be sure that your baby will get the milk he needs alone. Note that you should not clean the milk flow control system with a hard or sharp object (such as brushes, toothpicks or sharp nails).

Why does Calma sometimes drip slightly?

There are two situations in which Calma may drip slightly.

One is at the end of the meal. This drip may occur when the baby releases Calma before having drunk all the milk he has just extracted from the bottle.

If you keep the bottle upside down, it is also possible that a few drops of milk drip from Calma. This is because the membrane inside the milk flow control system is flexible, not rigid. The drip (of little importance) depends on the temperature and weight of the milk that is compressed against the membrane. Note that dripping has no impact on the functioning of Calma.

When is it necessary to replace Calma?

For hygiene reasons, we recommend replacing Calma every three months.
