HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MOSQUITOES THIS SUMMER?
They are the terror of the summer. The threat that we absolutely seek to avoid: MOSQUITOES! According to World Health Organization estimates, 247 million people fell ill in 2006 and about one million died from mosquito-borne diseases. This figure, as impressive as it is, is not so surprising when you know that there are no less than 3,500 species of mosquitoes in the world.
Mosquitoes are known as troublemakers or nuisances as they leave behind painful stinging and itchy skin. The majority of mosquitoes are not a threat because only some of them bite humans. Some, on the other hand, can be carriers of serious and fatal diseases such as: malaria, dengue fever, zika, chikungunya and the list is still long. As a result, there are many means put in place to eliminate or keep them away.
Chemical insecticides are chemical substances capable of destroying or repelling insects, ticks and mites. They must both control insect pests and be harmless to humans, but are these requirements reconcilable? Unfortunately, they are not.
We have been using these insecticides very heavily since the 1950s-1970s. They have become almost indispensable to most agricultural practices and to the improvement of public health. However, their use is not without drawbacks. These substances have had adverse effects on health and also on other species in our environment.
Currently, the effectiveness of the main chemical insecticide substances used are questioned:
- Icaridin or Picaridin: very recent substances whose safety data are relative.
- DEET: Highly controversial for its toxicity and duration of protection.
- DMP: controversial for its low effectiveness and short duration.
- EHD: low efficiency and short duration.
Lemongrass essential oil against mosquitoes
Natural insecticides are substances extracted from active ingredients of natural origin with the power to eliminate insects, larvae, ticks and mites. Faced with the failures of conventional treatments against mosquitoes, it was necessary to find a more natural and less invasive alternative.
Different types of natural insecticides have therefore been developed:
- minerals: fluorine, sulphur, copper
- organic: nicotine, pyrethrin
- based on essential oils or components of essential oils: lemongrass, palmarosa, geranium or even citriodiol
