What is comfrey?
Symphytum officinale, or comfrey, has been used for medicinal purposes since 400 BC to stop severe bleeding and treat bronchial problems, but not as a culinary herb. Known as “knitting” or slippery root.

From the Boraginaceae family, comfrey is a perennial herb, the size can reach 1.5 m in height. Native to Europe and Asia where it grows in humid and shady places. Blooms in May. The leaves of the comfrey are deep green, hairy and about 10 cm long.

Uses of Comfrey
With a long history of medical use, it has also been used to treat broken bones. Comfrey tea is often taken for internal ailments and poultices are applied for external conditions.

Comfrey has large amounts of allanthioin (also present in breast milk), which increases the growth rate, which in turn increases the number of white blood cells.

Allantoin application has been shown to heal wounds and burn faster and promote healthy skin with a high mucilage content. Due to this moisturizing and soothing by-product, comfrey can be added to certain cosmetics, creams, lotions or even added to bath water.

Comfrey  fertilizer is used for compost and fertiliser.
