Donkey milk for the skin: benefits, care and products

An effective raw material for its intended purpose - whether to brighten, exfoliate or moisturize - without being irritating. This is the case with donkey milk.

It has a long and fascinating history of use. It is rumored that Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk for her soft, supple skin. Centuries ago, it was used medicinally in parts of India and Africa. It is an ingredient used by Greek homeopathic physicians for years, both topically and internally. It has even been used as a substitute for breast milk, as it is structurally more similar to human milk. More recently, it was a K-beauty fashion ingredient formulated in leaf masks and the like. All this to say: if time and history are any indication, donkey milk has credibility.

Beauty brands are starting to bet on donkey milk. In fact, last year, it was the most searched ingredient on Google, with over 27 million results.

What are the benefits of donkey milk for the skin?
The ingredient is acclaimed for its dense nutrient profile. Called the "natural elixir of youth", it contains several special actives: vitamins A, D and C; as well as proteins and fatty acids. This mix of nutrients is significant for several reasons.

First, vitamin A - or where retinol is derived from. Retinol is adored for its ability to stimulate skin cell renewal and help skin cells act younger; however, it is notoriously hard on the skin. But natural alternatives, like vitamin A or bakuchiol, don't have the same irritation problems. (That said: they're not all that potent either, they don't all work the same, which is a good thing for many of us with sensitive skin!) Donkey's milk contains a surprisingly high amount of antioxidant, so a major The ingredient's functions are skin cell renewal. Expect younger, brighter skin with regular use.

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for our skin as it can help stop premature aging and has important anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies suggest that it may help relieve inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and acne. However, vitamin D's relationship with the skin is complex. The main way humans get it is through exposure to ultraviolet rays, but we also know that a lot of it has adverse effects on the skin. It's vital to take it as a supplement to your overall health, yes, but it can also help relieve stressed and stressed skin when using it topically. Donkey milk naturally contains the vitamin, unlike other milks.

So we have a number of other ingredients, like vitamin C. ("Vitamin C is one of the few active ingredients that can benefit all skin types," says Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, Certified Dermatologist.) That can help improve the collagen. Production in the skin, in addition to fighting free radicals and helping overall tone. Then there are the proteins and fatty acids that help to hydrate your skin as well.

Precautions.

It is a vegan product as it contains an animal by-product. So if avoiding this is important and your skin care standards, ignore this trend. However, Liz Folce, vice president of Korres, which uses the ingredient in her new line, explained to me during a Zoom call, donkey milk is collected humanely - with the baby and mother being kept together, unlike typical cow's milk extraction, where they are separated, as the dumb mother literally cannot produce milk without the child's presence. This also tends to mean that the ingredient is created in small batches (much like goat's milk), so it tends to be a rarer and harder-to-find ingredient.

Other than that, it's a very mild ingredient and should be suitable for most skin types. Be sure to do a patch test before applying it to your face, as we recommend with any new product or ingredient.
