Additional information:

About nasal wash:

Cleaning should be done with saline solution, which fluidifies and removes secretions from the upper airways. Nasal cleaning is extremely important for several reasons:

1- Nasal obstruction makes the child extremely irritated,

2- The child cannot eat well, as it is difficult to eat and breathe through the mouth at the same time.

2- The child has a lot of difficulty sleeping with a blocked nose.

3- The secretion accumulated in the upper airways can be colonized by bacteria, leading to the need for antibiotics.

4- The secretion can cause otitis if it goes to the ears and can cause sinusitis if it goes to the sinuses.

Doing the procedure properly, the child will not choke. It is also important to wait at least 1 minute before repeating the application.

HOW TO MAKE?

Nasal lavage is done with saline or 0.9% sodium chloride.

There are no contraindications or age limits, but it must be carried out very carefully to be really effective for the child.

Up to 2 years

The best way to perform a nasal cleaning in babies up to 2 years of age is with the child lying down, tilting the head slightly backwards and applying 1 to 2 ml of saline solution (or half a dropper) in each nostril, one nostril at a time.

The function of saline solution is to take the secretion to the pharynx, then it will be swallowed, that is, it actually removes the secretion from the upper airways”.

Over 2 years

“For children older than 2 years, the ideal is to use continuous jet devices. The child should be on the mother's lap or sitting with the head tilted back. It is applied for 1 to 2 seconds and the excess that will come out through the nostril is wiped away (because the child is standing up), and a part of the secretion will also be swallowed”.

It is important that the child is comfortable to do so, starting with small volumes of saline in a syringe.

The serum temperature should be room temperature or warm, never iced.

The procedure should be carried out with tranquility and affection, providing security for the child. For older children, it is essential to explain the importance of nasal cleaning.

Recommended for all ages

Nasal washing is a procedure known for over 5,000 years in traditional Indian medicine.

Studies argue that it has positive effects on both respiratory function and a person's physical and mental well-being.

If you are afraid to do it, ask your pediatrician how to do it and ask your child for a demonstration directly. In no way do it forcefully, as it can hurt and psychologically traumatize the child.

With dry weather, many babies and children have difficulty breathing, especially during autumn and winter. Correct hygiene is the best way to help the little ones, facilitating the drainage of secretions, and also eliminating particles with infectious agents.
